Songs in minor keys are rare in the children’s repertoire, so this song adds a valuable mood of mystery and anticipation.  It encourages quiet playing which produces the best sound from this instrument.  Most children tend to batter rather than play sensitively when faced with an instrument and we are encouraging sensitivity.  Regular contact with a set of 8 chime bars will eventually develop a consciousness of pitch differences and the corresponding colours, names numerals and sizes. We are content with small gains in perception over the term and do not expect that children will accurately play the song.  We are also developing the audience convention of quietly listening to another person.
