Here is a topic that connects toddlers to the wider world of work through familiar animals such as ponies, pigs, cows, ducks, sheep and chickens. They love using their imaginations to make the sound effects and move like the animals. There’s a lesser known nursery rhyme called Chook Chook about free-range hens. And there’s a well-known one about Little Bo-Peep who has to search for her lost animals. Each of these songs is telling children about how to interact compassionately with farm animals. This is a lesson plan rich in language development opportunities with the real 3 R’s — rhythm, rhyme and repetition. You will also be exposing your toddlers to a set of related words. This strengthens their spoken vocabulary because the matching images are readily available in children’s literature about farming, no doubt already on your bookshelf!
